Undergoing hair restoration is an exciting milestone, but knowing what to anticipate during post-operative recovery ensures both peace of mind and the highest graft survival rate. Here is the clinical healing timeline recommended by our surgical team at Anwar Clinic.

Days 1 to 3: Immediate Post-Op Care

During the first 72 hours, newly implanted grafts are establishing their blood supply. Keep the recipient area moist using the provided saline mist spray every 2–3 hours. Sleep with your head elevated at a 30–45 degree angle using a cervical travel pillow to prevent accidental graft friction and minimize forehead edema.

Days 4 to 10: Gentle Cleansing & Scab Shedding

Commence gentle cup washing using clinical baby shampoo. Do not scrub or rub the recipient area directly; instead, allow soapy foam to rest over the grafts and rinse gently with lukewarm water. By day 8–10, scabs soften and begin to shed naturally during washing.

Weeks 2 to 8: The 'Ugly Duckling' Phase & Shock Loss

Between weeks 2 and 6, patients often notice transplanted hair shafts shedding. Do not worry—this is telogen effluvium (shock loss), a completely normal biological reaction. The hair shafts shed, but the living dermal papillae (follicular roots) remain safely rooted in the scalp dermis entering a resting phase.

Months 3 to 6: The First Signs of New Growth

Fine, thin hairs emerge from the transplanted follicles around month 3 to 4. Over the following months, these hairs thicken, mature in caliber, and take on your natural hair texture and wave.

Months 9 to 12: Final Density and Maturation

By month 9–12, over 90–95% of transplanted follicles are actively growing mature terminal hair. Full density and final aesthetic maturation are achieved between 12 and 15 months.
